Radio Horton says goodbye to Volunteer

Banbury’s hospital, health and wellbeing broadcasting organisation, Radio Horton is sad to share the news of the passing of long-serving volunteer, Ray Kent who passed away on Saturday 18th December. Ray had been in hospital and a nursing home since falling and breaking her hip in late July.

A spokesperson for Radio Horton said: “Ray was a long-standing volunteer, joining the organisation in 2000. She will be sorely missed by all of us and remembered fondly and in admiration for the character and charm she brought to Radio Horton.”

“She was affectionately referred to as the ‘Grandmother of the station’. During her time at Radio Horton, Ray held a number of roles including on our committee as our secretary, in addition to visiting the wards, spending time chatting to patients, and presenting our flagship request programmes, to name a few. “

“Our thoughts are with Ray’s family and friends at this difficult time”.

In more recent years, Ray stepped back from playing an active role within Radio Horton, but nonetheless Ray continued to be a great advocate and supporter of the station, and was awarded Honorary Membership in 2016, with the Wilton Memorial Trophy presented to her by our Vice President, Jeremy Wilton. Ray continued to attend our Christmas parties and social events up until 2019, and last year was presented her 20 year Long Service Certificate on her doorstep.

Ray was known for making an impact to the lives of many volunteers, who all have their ownspecial memories of their time with her. Former volunteer, Matthew Holroyd tweeted:

Other Radio Horton volunteers paid tribute including Maria Mayo commented: “Ray was a lovely lady, and she really made me welcome, when I came down to be with John [Mayo].”

Elizabeth MacLeod said: “So very sorry to hear about Ray. It was she who introduced me to Radio Horton when I stopped being a Councillor on Cherwell District Council.”

Operational Manager for the Horton General Hospital, Yolanda Jacob added: “My sincere condolences to all of Ray’s family & friends. May she RIP. Lovely lady. Thoughts & prayers with you all at this very sad time. “
