On Thursday 5th July, the NHS (National Health Service) is celebrating its seventieth anniversary. With events taking place at hospitals across the country, Banbury’s hospital radio station, Radio Horton is marking the occasion with a series of broadcasts entitled “Your Horton Memories” and is calling on the help of the Banbury community, as well as current and former Horton staff and volunteers.
On 5th July 1948, the NHS was launched by Aneurin Bevan at Park Hospital in Manchester (better known today as Trafford Park Hospital). Since its inception, the NHS has transformed the health and wellbeing of the UK and today boasts global recognition. Of course, Banbury’s Horton General Hospital launched well before the NHS, which opened as the Horton Infirmary on 17th July 1872, almost 146 years ago.
Radio Horton is piecing together a documentary series on air, and on its website and is requesting both former and current members of staff from the Horton General Hospital, hospital volunteers, locals, historians and anyone who would like to participate by sharing their knowledge and memories of the Banbury’s hospital.
No matter how small the information, whether you would like to come and talk on a programme or simply share any historic memorabilia, photographs, memories or artefacts for publication on our website, Radio Horton would love to hear from you.
If you would be interested in taking part in this special series, please contact Radio Horton by emailing us.
