Ted Hanson MBE, the co-founder of Banbury’s hospital radio station Radio Horton, has scooped the prestigious top award from the UK’s Hospital Broadcasting Association (HBA) this year, for his outstanding contribution to hospital radio over the last 50 years.
Jim Simpson: “He’s described as an inspiration and, despite deteriorating health is still held in the highest regard by all who know him.”
The coveted John Whitney award was presented at the annual HBA Conference & Awards Ceremony, held last Saturday (29th March) in front of 233 delegates from 35 radio stations around the UK, at a glittering black tie event in Newcastle.
Radio Horton committee members Sam Smette and James Hulbert collected the award on the night from HBA Chairman Jim Simpson, on behalf of 77 year old Ted, who lives at The Ridings Care Home in Daventry Road, Banbury.
Speaking at the event, HBA’s Chairman Jim Simpson, said: “Ted is a former journalist who, back in 1964, had the idea to create a hospital radio station in the local area. It meant a year of detailed planning, buying equipment and admin. Since then, Ted has devoted most of his life to Radio Horton.
“Ted played an integral part in the station’s recent 50th anniversary celebrations, with a special programme from the care home where he now resides. He’s described as an inspiration and, despite deteriorating health is still held in the highest regard by all who know him.”
Commenting on the news, Radio Horton’s Sam Smette and James Hulbert, said: “We are absolutely elated at the news of Ted winning this prestigious award [The John Whitney Award]. We honestly didn’t know what to expect and were thrilled when Jim Simpson announced the winner. Ted dedicated much of his life to Radio Horton and is thoroughly deserving of this award. It will mean so much not only to him but also to all who care for him and those of his friends and colleagues at Radio Horton.”
Radio Horton will present the award to Ted Hanson and his carers at The Ridings Care Home in Banbury this week.
